Remembering Who You Are: What’s It About and Why It’s Important
Many of us fall under the roles and expectations of society. We choose careers based on what is considered prestigious or financially rewarding, stay in relationships because it’s “the right thing to do,” or do things we don’t necessarily like to do.
It’s kind of a case of “to each their own,” as Danielle points out. “But you need to find what works for you, so this is about coming back and remembering who you are.”
It involves the journey to the self, away from societal conformations. It means finding and embracing what you truly want, believe in, and enjoy without being influenced by others’ opinions or judgments.
Even research reveals that being true to yourself is strongly linked with higher well-being and greater work engagement. That’s why understanding and embracing your authentic self is incredibly important.
Signs of Disconnection From the Soul
Knowing if you’re disconnected from your soul is crucial. Sometimes, it can be linked to unresolved emotional trauma.
“The reality is, the stuff that blocks us is our density,” Danielle explains. “And our density is our emotions and our trauma, and every single person has gone through stuff and has emotional junk and trauma in their field.”
As a result, this, as Danielle points out, can show up as:
- Persistent feelings of confusion or loss of direction.
- A sense of living on autopilot, without joy or passion.
- Chronic dissatisfaction or a feeling that something is missing in your life.
- Difficulty in making decisions or trusting one’s intuition.
- A tendency to prioritize the opinions or expectations of others over one’s own true desires.
Acknowledging these signs can be the first step towards healing and reconnecting with your soul.
Danielle Paige’s 3 Top Tips to Help With Remembering Who You Are
So how can you be who you truly are? Here are Danielle’s top three tips:
1. Be Aware of Your Self-Talk
Often, we are our own harshest critics, berating ourselves for perceived shortcomings or mistakes. “You’re so stupid,” “you’re not worthy,” and whatever other dialogues you may say to yourself, even subconsciously.
“There’s so many people that don’t even realize the negativity is running all the time,” says Danielle. But it’s something that significantly shapes your mindset and, consequently, your self-perception.
So be mindful of negative self-talk patterns. Changing them can profoundly impact your self-esteem and confidence.
2. Listen to Your Intuition and Inner Guidance
Trusting your intuition is crucial in the journey of self-discovery. Your inner voice is a powerful guide that can lead you towards choices that align with your true self.
“You need to listen to that voice in your head,” Danielle advises, “that voice in your body that’s whispering to you where to go.”
Even if it leads you down an unconventional path. Because the bottom line is, it’s about honoring your feelings and instincts, recognizing that they are valid and essential components of who you are.
3. Let Go of Preconceived Notions and Societal Conditioning
Societal expectations and cultural norms often dictate our choices. They push us to conform rather than embrace our true selves.
“When we think [things] should be a certain way, we’re still holding on to the belief,” she explains. The long-held beliefs and values imposed by society, family, or peers.
However, she goes on to say that “the path of awakening is true surrender.” It’s the need to shed these external influences and embrace authenticity.
It involves setting realistic expectations for yourself, assessing whether these externally imposed standards truly resonate with your personal values and identity. And while this process of unlearning and relearning can be a challenging journey, it is essential for genuine self-discovery and living authentically.
Be More You
Remembering who you are is a radical act of self-love and acceptance. It’s about honoring your uniqueness, embracing your individuality, and living a life that resonates with your true essence.
