Live your purpose
“Live your purpose, find your passion,” they all say. Like catchy mantras whispered on motivational posters, these phrases dance around on social media, plastered across self-help books, and echo in every inspirational TED Talk. But beneath the glossy veneer, a gnawing question remains: What does it all really mean?
Is it the eight-figure business, the Instagram-perfect life, or the soul-deep fulfillment promised in countless blog posts? Is it a singular, preordained path bathed in celestial light, or a winding, messy journey paved with equal parts triumph and stumble?
The truth, as Amrit Sandhu, an internationally acclaimed coach and founder of the Inspired Evolution podcast, reveals in his enlightening sit-down on Honest Conversations, is far more nuanced and infinitely more exciting.
This internationally acclaimed—what else?—life purpose coach and founder of the Inspired Evolution podcast doesn’t peddle platitudes or paint purpose as a shimmering mirage on the horizon.
Instead, he dismantles the rigid constructs of “shoulds” and “oughts” and invites you to step into the raw, vibrant arena of self-discovery. He reminds us that finding your purpose isn’t some distant treasure to be chased, but a flame already flickering within, waiting to be fanned into a roaring inferno.
Amrit Sandhu is a dynamic international speaker and the enthusiastic host of the Inspired Evolution podcast. With a background in engineering, his journey took a remarkable turn when he discovered the transformative power of mindfulness and meditation. Now, he’s a Master Certified Trainer for Mindvalley in Australia and India and a passionate advocate for personal growth.
Purpose? Passion? What Are They? And Why Are They Important?
Purpose is your “why,” the overarching reason driving you forward. Passion, on the other hand, is your “what,” the activities that ignite joy and fuel your pursuit of a meaningful life.
Oftentimes, they’re used interchangeably. However, as Amrit explains, “Our passions are for ourselves; our purpose is for others.”
Here’s a look at them side by side:
Purpose | Passion |
It’s the driving force behind your actions and decisions. It can be related to making a difference in the world, pursuing a specific goal, or fulfilling a personal value. Purpose gives your life a sense of focus and helps you navigate challenges with resilience. It can be a lifelong journey of exploration and discovery. | It’s the activities or experiences that ignite your soul, bring you joy, and charge your creative superpower. Passion provides the energy and motivation to pursue your purpose. Your passions may change over time as you grow and evolve. |
Make no mistake, though; they’re not mutually exclusive.
Even research has found that those who identified their purpose and pursued it with passion were significantly more likely to report higher levels of well-being, happiness, and overall life satisfaction. They had a stronger sense of direction, greater resilience in the face of challenges, and a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them.
“If you’re clear on your purpose, you’re generally clear on your values as well, right? So whatever lines up to your values and purpose means that you are already cultivating your passions.” — Amrit Sandhu
The key to it all is to cultivate both for a richer and more fulfilling heart-centered life.
Amrit Sandhu’s Advice On How to Find Your Purpose and Live It
There’s a certain level of overwhelm when you’re faced with the question, “What is my purpose in life?”
But what if you had a guide to make it simpler? That’s where Amrit steps in with his valuable insights on how to find your purpose in life.
1. Unleash the Power of Curiosity
The key place to start learning how to live your purpose is actually “your own curiosities,” according to Amrit. It’s not just about asking questions; it’s about getting into that childlike inquisitiveness, asking “why” with wide-eyed wonder.
It puts you into lower consciousness, so to speak, so you can explore what genuinely interests you. It might be the latest tech gadgets or ancient Egyptian history—these are the breadcrumbs leading to your passion. For Amrit, his curiosity about people and their behaviors led him from a traditional career in engineering to a fulfilling path in coaching and podcasting.
“When you’ve got your curiosity points,” Amrit advises, “cultivate them to cultivate your passions, and eventually you could serve your passions to others. And that service is your purpose.”
2. Transforming Stress Into Your Secret Weapon
Stress often gets a bad rap as the destroyer of your happy brain. However, Amrit suggests a different perspective: view stress as a signal, not a setback.
“I find myself saying this again and again (and obviously there’s an asterisk on this to some degree)—stress is a blessing,” he says. “Stress is letting you know that you’re out of alignment, you’re pushing too hard, you’re going in the wrong direction.”
Think of times when you’ve felt most stressed—what were they telling you? Maybe your job didn’t click with your values, or a hidden passion is begging for attention.
The thing is, as Amrit points out, stress can be the catalyst that prompts you to reevaluate and redirect your life. And with intentioning, you can stop feeling stuck in life and live your purpose.
3. Fueling Your Purpose with Self-Care
Sure, self-care can be about bubble baths and spa days. But it can also be the fuel that keeps you going on your path to purpose.
Amrit stresses the importance of taking care of your mental and physical health as you pursue your dreams. “Anxiety,” he says, “leads you to the future; depression to the past.”
Plus, when you’re in good shape, mentally and physically, you’re more equipped to face challenges and seize opportunities.
What does this mean? Set aside time for activities that rejuvenate you. It could be meditation, as it was for Amrit, or it could be something else that resonates more with you—perhaps jogging, painting, or cooking.
Remember, self-care is essential. By taking care of yourself, you ensure that you are the best version of yourself, ready to explore your passions and contribute to the world.
4. Surround Yourself with Positive, Supportive People
Think about your current crew—do they lift you up or drag you down? Build a network of friends, family, or mentors who get your journey and offer honest feedback. They’ll be your sounding board, your hype squad, and sometimes the reality check you need.
Amrit’s own journey was influenced by mentors who guided him and friends who supported his ventures. So, look around and actively seek to connect with people who inspire you and believe in your potential. The right people can be a game-changer in your quest to find and live your purpose.
Live. Love. Purpose.
Amrit’s insights and advice are only the beginning of a beautiful journey toward a meaningful life. And there’s more where that came from.
